Hotel raises nearly £3000
to save planting in the park

CANNIZARO House Hotel has raised nearly £3000 at a special fund-raising reception and auction to save summer planting in the park's famous Sunken Garden. The function was organised before Merton Council's change of heart on this year's summer bedding, so the funds will now be used for alternative planting in the park.

The reception attracted some 80 guests, paying £45 a head for champagne and canapés, a three-course dinner, disco and a fund-raising auction. Friends of Cannizaro Park Chairman Tony Matthews told diners the good news about Merton's decision to restore £100,000 to the borough parks budget, saving the summer bedding this year. But he warned that this was no guarantee that the same would happen again.

He said: "That’s why tonight’s party is so important. Why we need to raise funding wherever we can and why – even if Merton DOES pay for this year’s summer bedding – that’s no guarantee it will do so in future."

The reception was a chance to help build funds to face the next crisis that came along, he added.
