FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wimbledon School of Art and "Park 06" Summer 2006 PARK 06, this year's joint Wimbledon School of Art and University of East London exhibition, took place in Cannizaro from 5-9 May. Local schools also contributed.
Among the works were Tracey Eastham's plywood and fence-posts work entitled "Cannizaro Park with Transposition" (above left) and Lara Rodgett's "Mirror Plastic" (above right), both capturing the rural atmosphere of the park.
Steven Wright's imaginative
recreation of the Duke of Cannizzaro's diary, "Memoirs of a Regency Rake"
(left), was a masterstroke. Displayed in a glass case beside the hotel, this
brought the character to life both visually and through an autobiographical
medium with two pages open to be read. No previous exhibit has used quite the
same concept to link into Cannizaro's actual history. Final year sculpture student Hannah Tucker (right) created her first performance based artwork, presenting humans ‘acting like animals’. They wore business suits but donned animal headdresses such as those of rams and stags. Tamiko O’Brien, Pathway Leader in Sculpture at WSA, said: "We invited the curator Peter Fillingham because we knew he would bring his openness, insight and humour to the event. He has worked on numerous projects in France and Holland and has inspired the students to really think about what it is to make works for this very special location." Some works felt out of place in the park, others questioned the way we
use it. Ann Haycock's "Four Knitted Patchwork Blanket" saw her knitting herself
on to a bench in the Keir Garden amid bright colours as she enjoyed some quality
time with nature.
