Park security tops New Year agenda

THE growing problem of youth gangs encroaching on Cannizaro Park after dark - particularly in summertime - has prompted an action plan between the Friends and Merton Council.
Following a meeting between the Committee and officials on 30 November, Merton promised to provide a steel railing style fence at the Main Gate, supported by a large spiny shrub. The allotment gate would be fitted with a new lock and security would be improved in Chester Road.
Funding would be sought too from the Safer Merton Group for temporary additional cover at the weekends and in the evenings. Friday night police patrols have been extended. Drunken vandals were often ejected in recent months.
