THE FRIENDS OF

CANNIZARO PARK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Juliet takes over the reins

 Winter 2007/8

JULIET Willis (left) has been voted in by the Committee as fifth Chairman of the Friends since 1996. She replaces Tony Matthews who has resigned to take a back seat after three years in the chair and 11 years on the Committee as a founder of the Friends.

Juliet joined the Committee in January 2000 and has organised winter talks, tours and other activities events since then. She was Secretary until 2004.

In her first message as Chairman she said: “I know there has been a lot of concern over recent years about the poor level of maintenance in the park and the effect that Merton’s funding cutbacks have had on the overall  appearance. However, I believe there are signs that the work the Committee has been doing in talking to the Council will bring important changes. We are hoping for positive proposals soon on permanent planting at the main entrance.

“As the new Chairman, I can tell you that I am passionate about gardening and garden design and very keen to see an improvement in the  upkeep and maintenance of the park.

“You may recall that last summer the Committee wished to apply jointly with Merton Council to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a substantial grant to bring about renovation to the park. Unfortunately, this turned out to be unsuccessful. However there seems to have been a change of heart and there are indications that ultimately the Council would like this project to go ahead.

“In the meantime, we are always looking for volunteers to help with future gardening projects in the park. So if you would like to offer your help, do please write to me c/o Willow House.

“I would like to wish  all those who support our work a very happy and peaceful New Year and I hope that 2008 will result in some much needed improvements to the garden we all love so much.”
