FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Fragrant future for the Dutch Garden Spring 2008
HERBOLOGIST Anthony Gardiner (left) is masterminding a transformation of Cannizaro’s Dutch Garden, using sweet smelling herbs. Funded by the Friends, his plan sees the enclosed section of the park behind the Sunken Garden converted to feature two culinary, two aromatic ornamental and two carpet border beds, as well as two large borders containing 45 different herb species. Tarragon, sages, chamomile, oregano, bay and chives are among the culinary attractions, with box hedging and lavenders in the middle, and a collection of thymes and marjorams in front of the two rear shelters. The south-facing and shady borders add mint, fennel and primrose among many others on one side and sweet cicely, garlic, lemon balm, meadowsweet and far more on the other. Anthony launched the new Dutch Garden as guest speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting on May 27 at Cannizaro House. Returning after his popular debut at the AGM two years ago, he gave a short tour and then answered questions from members about the park’s new feature.
