HEAD gardener Martin Butt and his colleague Abi Rose have welcomed the 20 helping hands they now get for 90 minutes every Friday afternoon from the boys of King’s College School, a few yards away from Cannizaro Park. Nine volunteers from the lower sixth form and teacher Tony Pleece support them by clearing brambles and planting bulbs in various parts of the park.

Volunteer Andrew Farr said: “Assisting the gardeners we learn to appreciate our local gardens and help to complete unfinished jobs in places such as Lady Jane’s Wood or the Sunken Garden. We hope to carry on helping the gardeners for years to come.”

They will be working in the Mediterranean Garden in the new term. Chris Mountford, former parks manager and now a Friends Committee member, has been giving the boys gardening advice.
