Volunteers help replant the Wild Garden

Summer 2006

FRIENDS joined Merton gardeners to replant the restored Water Garden on Saturday, 6 May.

The area behind the water cascade is known as the Wild Garden. Merton bought hundreds of  plants to restock the area and the gardeners began the job the week before. However volunteers from the Friends Committee made their own direct contribution to transforming the scene.

More than 40 species of plants feature on the new plan for the site designed by gardener Abi Rose. As well as varieties of Azaleas and Acer Palmatum trees, these range from Hydrangea Quercifolia, Nandina Firepower and Phormium Tenax Dazzler to selections of Geranium, Iris, Primula, Zantedeschia, Osmunda Regalis, Arum Italicum Pictum, Helleborus Orientalis.

It was the first time since November 2003 that the Friends had actively assisted in replanting an area of the park. In past years they transformed the Iris beds at Connoisseurs Corner, deadheaded roses in the Rose Garden, and helped replant the beds beside the Cannizaro House terrace. Further direct action is planned for other areas in future.
