ARTS Council England
has encouraged Merton to put in an application to increase the number of artist
studios within Cannizaro Park. The grant would also cover a gallery
or educational workshop space and upgrade the toilets and surface area.
Merton Arts Development Officer Maureen Pepper said: “I have met with planning
officers who thought the proposal was a big improvement on the rusty gantry
presently there. A gallery workshop space would be an additional resource and
public benefit to the park.
“I have asked ACAVA to do some drawings showing how the units would look from
the path by the pond and from inside the studio compound.”
A request for the Friends to sponsor an annual commission of a temporary artwork
is being considered.
