CONSTRUCTION work lasting for nine weeks from Monday 6th April will close the side entrance to Cannizaro Park for the rest of spring and early summer. The entrance is normally open when the gardeners are working in the park but it will not be accessible again until contractors Soden Construction have replaced the gardeners' hut and substituted a vandal-proof wall for the current boundary fencing.

The gardeners' hut (seen above left opposite the dumping area) is said to contain asbestos and needs removing for safety reasons. The boundary fence (above right) has been repeatedly vandalised over the years by intruders breaking into the park after hours. The new wall is intended finally to deal with this problem as it should be accompanied by prickly plants to deter any climbers.

Merton Council is spending £20,000 on the whole construction project.
